John 5:8-9 (NIV)
God Answers
(woman kneels down to pray, facing audience, she is troubled, afraid, and she obviously isn't expecting much out of this prayer, at east not at first)

WOMAN:
(sighing)  Dear Lord.  God.  (sighs)  Heavenly Father...  (long pause)

LORD:
(voice)  Did you need to talk with Me?

WOMAN:
(startled, looks up at the ceiling, looks around room)  Who in the world?

LORD:
Not IN the world.

WOMAN:
Lord? You're answering me?

LORD:
Certainly.  I always answer you.  Why do you seem so surprised?

WOMAN:
(thinks)  I guess I shouldn't be.  But it's just a little surprising.

LORD:
How do you feel?  Is there something bothering you right now?  Anything giving you pain?

WOMAN:
Well.  Actually.  (hesitates, embarrassed)  My knees are kind of killing me

LORD:
(laughs)  Well get up.  Make yourself comfortable.

WOMAN:
(sits in chair, rubs knees)  Thanks, this feels much better.

LORD:
So speak up, what did you want to talk to Me about?  I'm sure it wasn't your knees  (when she remains quite, He continues)  Don't feel uncomfortable.  You always know that I'm listening...

WOMAN:
But You usually don't talk back like this...

LORD:
Haven't you always wanted Me to talk to you, this way?  Now come on, tell Me what you wanted to tell Me.  I promise I'll answer you -- I always answer you.

(woman raises her eyebrow, but doesn't speak)

All right, I know what you're thinking -- the Israel trip you prayed for last year, that you wanted so much -- you feel that I copped out, right?

WOMAN:
I really did want that trip.  And I prayed so hard.  And I BELIEVED you were going to send me into the Holy Land...

LORD:
I would have loved for you to visit that place.  Truly,  it would have been a wonderful experience for you -- your faith would have grown, walking where I walked, seeing some of the sites where I prayed, talked, sang, and worked.  (woman makes face)  Now come on, why are you making that face?

WOMAN:
Well you make it sound so wonderful.  How come You didn't say yes to my prayers?

LORD:
I have a Master Plan, and you fit right within that Plan.  I need you to do work for Me, and you have been doing so wonderfully.

WOMAN:
(excited)  Really?

LORD:
Yes.  Really.  The week you were to go to Israel, do you remember what happened?

WOMAN:
Yeah.  I sat at home.  Bored.  With nothing to do!

LORD:
Really.  Is that what you think?  Let Me remind you.  You were bringing your groceries home, this was a Thursday night, and you were having troubles with the stickshift as you parked your car.  Does all this ring a bell?

WOMAN:
Yeah.  I kind of remember that.  At least I never had to have any work done on the clutch.  The problem just seemed to go away.

LORD:
And do you remember who talked to you?

WOMAN:
Nobody talked to me.

LORD:
Think about it.  You were in a bad mood, thinking how much a new clutch would cost you.  And then you dropped your keys as you stood at the trunk.  In fact, you may have said a couple of phrases that My followers generally don't make...

WOMAN:
Oops!  I do have a problem with my language sometimes...

LORD:
Yes, you do, don't you? But you'll work on it. And then, remember? Someone stepped up beside you, to help you.

WOMAN:
Oh, that was Martin!  My next-door neighbor.  We didn't say anything important, You know.  Nothing special happened.

LORD:
Really!  Don't you know that you saved a life that night!

WOMAN:
Me?

LORD:
You were a part of My Plan.  Your neighbor, Martin, was in a foul mood, and he planned to stay at home drinking that night, angry, depressed -- but seeing you flustered, dropping your keys, cursing so clumsily -- it brightened his spirits.  And he stepped across the lawn to help you.  And he helped you carry your groceries inside your house.  Do you remember?

WOMAN:
Well, yes.  But I don't see how any of that could have saved anyone's life.

LORD:
Martin has a brother who is disabled -- he is also a drinker.  That night, depressed and alone, he was going to commit suicide.  Earlier in the day, Martin and Tim argued on the phone.  Martin was supposed to visit Tim that night to watch a movie together -- it's what they usually do on Thursday nights.  But because of the argument, Martin was going to stay home drinking, and the loneliness would just be too much for Tim, this time, this night.  Do you remember what you said to Martin, as he was leaving your house?

WOMAN:
Oh, I don't know.  Probably what I always say when someone helps me: "God bless you!"

LORD:
Exactly.  And I did bless Martin.  And Tim.  Helping you, Martin was able to rise above his anger.  And with your words, "God bless you," a thought process began in Martin.  The Holy Spirit was with Him, pleading with him, softening him.  And even though Martin has not accepted me, because of you, helping you, he opened himself to my influence.  And he felt such a rush of love for his little brother Timmy, that instead of going inside his house and opening a bottle, he instead climbed into his car and went to be with his brother.  Do you know what they talked about that night?

WOMAN:
Clumsy women who can't get their groceries out of the trunk?

LORD:
There might have been some mention of that.  But actually, they skipped the movie that night, and talked about Me instead.  A week later, Tim accepted me -- and he's been working on your neighbor Martin ever since.  Made some progress, too!

WOMAN:
Wow!  So I was a part of that whole process?

LORD:
You certainly were.  And you are, every day, in so many ways, it would take Me years to tell you about all the different ways to fit into my Grand Plan.  But don't worry, we are going to have plenty of time -- very soon you'll have all the time to hear about everything.

WOMAN:
Lord!  You've made me so happy.  Israel doesn't seem like such a big deal.

LORD:
Oh, you'll make it to Israel.  Don't you worry about that!  But come, tell Me, what were you going to speak with me about tonight?  I know you haven't even talked to your doctor about it, have you?

WOMAN:
No.  I haven't.  I'm too afraid.  I'm too afraid to even talk about it with you.

LORD:
You found a lump in your stomach last week.  And it was painful.  And it seems to have grown larger.  And then there was the blood in the toilet...

WOMAN:
WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?  (covers face with hands)

LORD:
First.  Don't be afraid.  Trust me.  I have revealed that it is My will that you be healthy, that you live your life more abundantly. As I have promised you, I intend you no harm, I have a future planned for you.  Think about it, in a billion years from today, when you have been living in the New Jerusalem and visiting other planets and making new friends for millions and millions and millions of years, do you think you will spend much time worrying about that lump in your stomach?

WOMAN:
Well, uh, NOT THEN. I guess. But today . . . TODAY, I can't stop thinking about it.

LORD:
Stand up.  You are healthy, My daughter.

WOMAN:
(a little afraid, slowly stands up, pushes her hand into her stomach, a look of wonder spreads over her face)  Lord?  It's gone!  You healed me!

LORD:
Yes, I did.  But remember, there is trouble in this world.  The world is full of sin, and you will have tribulation. You have been sick before, and there will be sickness in the future. Obey Me, and live the way I have revealed to you, and you will always be a part of My plan. Do not focus on the darkness. Darkness is in the world.  But trust in Me, always. I Am Light, and the Father of Lights. And because I am always with you.

WOMAN:
Oh thank You Lord!  THANK YOU!

LORD:
Remember. My Grace is sufficient for you. And now you can get back to praying for that red dress you want so much.  But I'll let you in on a little secret, okay?

You WILL get that dress, even though it is far too expensive.  But a week later you'll see a blue dress in a store window, and you'll forget all about the red dress in your closet!

WOMAN:
(thoughtful, begins to exit)  You know, Lord, maybe we can cut right to the chase -- do you think you could just tell me the store where that blue dress is hanging?
