(three SOLDIERS jogging from back of room to front with DRILL SARGE jogging alongside, chant-singing as they jog, military cadence)
DRILL SARGE:
(barking out chant-song) Our commission is to serve the Lord!
SOLDIERS:
(in unison chant-song) Equipped with gifts of one accord!
DRILL SARGE:
The Lord calls us to fill the breach!
SOLDIERS:
(unison) Our fellow man HELP, HEAL and TEACH!
DRILL SARGE:
Sound OFF!
SOLDIERS:
(unison) ONE -- TWO!
DRILL SARGE:
SOUND Off!
SOLDIERS:
(unison) THREE -- FOUR!
(SOLDIERs reach front and quickly FALL IN to attention, although a little sloppily, DRILL SARGE begins to strut and straighten up the SOLDIERs)
DRILL SARGE:
Straighten up, you bunch of civilian tender foots!
(goes to GOOFY) Suck in that gut, soldier!
(passes STRAIGHT A) Lift that chin, straighten those shoulders! Why I tell ya, I've never seen such a bunch of loafers in my LIFE!
(stops at WIMPY) Tuck in that shirt! Shine those shoes! Stand up straight! Eyes to the front!
GOOFY:
(raising hand shyly) Uh? Excuse -- um, er, excuse me?
DRILL SARGE:
Button your lip, soldier! And wipe that grin off your face!
GOOFY:
(can't help but grin goofily)
DRILL SARGE:
STOP SMILING!
GOOFY:
(stops smiling, but posture goes flat -- slumps dejectedly)
DRILL SARGE:
(up close, in GOOFY's face) Stand up STRAIGHT, soldier!
GOOFY:
(stands up straight, but goofy grin returns -- just can't help it!)
DRILL SARGE:
STOP SMILING!
GOOFY:
(stops smiling, but posture goes flat -- slumps dejectedly)
DRILL SARGE:
(bellowing now) Stand up STRAIGHT, soldier!
GOOFY:
(stands up straight, but goofy grin returns -- just can't help it!)
DRILL SARGE:
(exasperated, grabs head in hands in walks in circles) Argh! It just seems completely impossible! But at least we know that with God, all things are possible! Okay, we better move onto weapons training. (lifts first of weapons -- toy guns or swords)
Soldiers! We are involved in a WAR. And you soldiers have been called to fight in this war. Do you all choose to serve the Commander in this war? (fervent nods, and GOOFY raises his hand to volunteer)
Your foes are dangerous. And they are not human. And through human eyes, it seems pretty bleak -- not one of you is REMOTELY equipped to deal with this adversary -- he's a dragon, a snake, and the deceiver of the whole world. But you can thank the Commander that He will equip you. (holding up weapon) Our weapons are top of the line, cutting edge, super-powered and super-duper.
(tosses weapon to STRAIGHT A)
STRAIGHT A:
(catches weapon) Thank you!
DRILL SARGE:
(picking up next weapon and tossing to WIMPY) Look ALIVE soldier!
WIMPY:
(catching weapon, looks at it and admires it) WOW!
DRILL SARGE:
(next weapon toss to GOOFY) Think fast soldier!
GOOFY:
(dropping weapon) Oops! Sorry about that, Sir!
DRILL SARGE:
(slapping hand over face) Aargh! Oh well . . . I want you grunts to get out there and give your all! You help each, and help all the other grunts out there. You stand firm when you engage the enemy -- you can beat him by the authority of the Commander. Now get out there -- and check back with me tomorrow morning!
SOLDIERS:
(in unison) Yes sir! Alright! Come on, guys, let's get 'em! Yeah!
(WIMPY hesitates as GOOFY and STRAIGHT A charge off-stage and DRILL SARGE strolls away deep in thought -- WIMPY hides his weapon in a safe place and then casually strolls off-stage after the other two SOLDIERs)
(from off-stage: sounds of battle, explosions, gunfire, screams)
(after a few moments, SOLDIERs troop back in -- STRAIGHT A is exhilarated and happy, triumphant and psyched-up, whereas GOOFY is not so "high," but DOES have a new sense of confidence -- WIMPY seems a little furtive and worried)
DRILL SARGE:
WELL IT'S ABOUT TIME! Fall in, soldiers! ATTENTION! Now I want some reports! You first, Straight A!
STRAIGHT A:
(saluting) Sir! I engaged the enemy! And the enemy fell back! With my weapon from the Commander, and by His authority, the enemy fell back on all fronts! And I came to the aid of many of my fallen comrades, Sir! I helped them back onto their feet. I'm ready for further orders, Sir! I would like to return to the front, immediately!
DRILL SARGE:
WELL DONE, Straight A! A superlative effort! You have done the Commander's cause proud, soldier! GREAT JOB! And what about YOU, Goofy, give me your report!
GOOFY:
(saluting, shy and goofy, guffawing after each word) Well, ahh, huh, well ya see Sir! Uh, I was kinda shy to go out, you know, um, er, huh, you know, and face the enemy, directly, you know. And I don't know any of them fellers out there that have fallen down in the battle. But you know, the enemy DID, uh-huh, er, hmm, the enemy DID attack me, like, and you know, this here weapon worked just fine -- kinda like a miracle!
DRILL SARGE:
Well, Goofy, I must say, I AM surprised. I'm proud of you, Goofy. You HAVE served the Commander. You are on the right track -- now mind you, you DO have a lot of progress to make -- but you are definitely on the right track! Nice job! And now what about you, Wimpy? Give me your report!
WIMPY:
(saluting, but can't meet Drill Sarge's eyes) Um, Sir! We all know how MEAN you are, and um, well, I didn't want to break the weapon and get you mad . . . so I hid it over here (goes and retrieves weapon), and kept it safe! So see? It's not broken! Did I do good?
DRILL SARGE:
(livid with anger) DID YOU DO GOOD! Don't you know that these weapons are given for SERVICE! If you are in His Majesty's Sacred Service you're going to have to help out, soldier! If He equips you to serve, you're expected to SERVE!
WIMPY:
(dejected, sad, eyes on the ground) I -- I'm sorry, Sir...
DRILL SARGE:
(surprisingly caring) I know son, I know. I don't blame you. As they say, war is . . . well, war is not very nice. (takes the weapon from WIMPYs hands)
WIMPY:
Please give me another chance, Sir!
DRILL SARGE:
You'll get another chance, soldier. We'll try you out in the medic corp where you can shield your comrades in arms. (turns to STRAIGHT A) But as for our top soldier -- if you use your gifts well, like you've done Straight A, well, then you get MORE gifts. (tosses weapon to STRAIGHT A)
STRAIGHT A:
(catches weapon) Thank you Sir! I'm ready! Let me at 'em!
DRILL SARGE:
We're One Team, soldiers! We'll help each other. When one of us stumbles, the rest of us will step into that gap and help our buddy up! Now step up here and join me in reading a communiqué from His Majesty, our Commander...
(DRILL SARGE and SOLDIERs take turns reading scripture from first page)
